An introduction to public policy: rationales for government intervention, the influence of interest groups and political institutions on policy outcomes, and the various stages in the policy process. Prerequisite: All of POLI 100, POLI 101, POLI 240. Or third-year standing or higher.

The contemporary international security context: reorientation of the study of security, patterns of inter- and intrastate conflict and communal violence, dilemmas of international response and conflict management. An interdisciplinary study of best practice, politics, and ethics associated with technical solutions to humanitarian assistance within Canada and abroad; examines policies used in aid and development contexts with emphasis on the application of engineering. Restricted to students with a Major, Combined Major, Honours, Honours with, or Minor specialization in Political Science or International Relations, or at least third-year standing in any BASc program. Ecological consequences of the global political economy. Prerequisite: All of POLI 100, POLI 101, POLI 240. Or third-year standing or higher.

Ethics in politics, including citizenship and public service, and practices demanded by the institutions of democracy. Restricted to students in fourth-year standing or higher.

Overview of traditional democratic theory with close readings of several contemporary theories, such as those of Habermas, Rawls, and Arendt. Readings are drawn from complete original texts, and assessment is based on a research essay. Restricted to students in fourth-year standing or higher.

Seminar on the origins and politics of international law, and its impact on international affairs; the laws of war, human rights, environment, law of the sea, and international criminal law. Restricted to students in fourth-year standing or higher.

Environmental and natural resource economics: externalities, property rights, public goods, market failure, inter-generational trade-offs, and optimal extraction of biological and depletable resources. Environmental regulation, industrial competitiveness, and distribution of income and welfare. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

International policy processes associated with themes of environmental security: disaster prevention; resource curse; institution building and conflict minerals and global expropriation. Issues to be considered include human rights advocacy and peacekeeping, food security and food sovereignty. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

Linkages between human rights, development and justice and the policy interventions which flow from them. Human rights policy including: international organizations, national actors, non-governmental organizations and communities. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

Actors, processes and contexts shaping global health policy; politics and policy processes at the global and related levels; impact and influence of dynamics within and between different levels on health disparities and inequitable access to health services and technologies.

Climate science and impacts including: carbon management options; mitigation and energy system changes; efficiency options; 'end-of-pipe' solutions; vulnerability and adaptation to climate change; carbon economics and organization-level strategies in a carbon-constrained world. Applications of theories and research in developmental psychology to contemporary social issues; topics may include daycare, child abuse, divorce and remarriage, substance abuse, sexuality. Psychological theory and research on the interaction between organisms and the physical environment; emphasis on applications to the design and management of constructed and natural environments. Faculty and students from different disciplines act as an interdisciplinary team studying specific resource problems with ecological, economic, demographic and social dimensions. Techniques and methods are emphasized to show their value in integrating knowledge, defining policy and facilitating communication. Several sections with different emphasis offered each year. Inequality, institutions, social structure and social change. Credit will be granted for only one of SOCI 102 or SOCI 100.

Major theories of consumer society, evaluating impacts of shopping on human and non-human environments and popular solutions to these impacts.

Social organization of Canadian society: relationships between social institutions and social processes (e.g., economics, education, family, law, media, and politics); including issues of ancestry, ethnicity, gender, region, and social class. Prerequisite: One of SOCI 100, SOCI 101, SOCI 102.
