Environmental geography has experienced a renaissance in recent years. This survey course introduces students to current debates, key conceptual approaches, and outstanding recent research within human geography, focusing on political ecology. Specifically, we will explore the ways in which political ecology has been challenged and “othered” in various ways, particularly given the fact that the both the “material turn” and the “cultural turn” have destabilized concepts like “environment” and “nature”–with significant consequences for political ecologists. Topics to be covered include: environmental racism; social construction of nature; animal geographies; and posthumanism and biopolitics.

Physical principles underlying weather and climates. Thermal, moisture and wind climates from the scale of plants and animals to the globe. Daily weather systems and climate change. Credit will be granted for only one of GEOS_V (or GEOB_V) 200, GEOS_V (or GEOB_V) 204, or APBI_V 244. This course is recommended for students with credit in one of GEOS_V 102, GEOB_V 102, or second-year standing in science. [3-2*-0] Equivalency: APBI_V 244 and GEOB_V 200.

Meteorology and climatology at the micro-, local, and meso-scales. Interactions between land surfaces and atmosphere. Basics of atmospheric turbulence and transfer processes. Microclimates on scales of a leaf to those of a large valley. Recommended prerequisites: one of GEOB_V 200, GEOS_V 200, GEOB_V 204, GEOS_V 204, ATSC_V 201. [3-0-0] Credit will be granted for only one of GEOB_V 300 or GEOS_V 300. Equivalency: GEOB_V 300.

Principles of hydrology at site, watershed, and larger regional scales. Introduction to techniques of measurement and analysis. Emphasizes surface water hydrology of western North America. Recommended prerequisites: one of GEOB_V 200, GEOS_V 200, GEOB_V 204, GEOS_V 204, APBI_V 244, ATSC_V 201, and one of PHYS_V 100-level or CHEM_V 123. [3-2*-0] Credit will be granted for only one of GEOB_V 305 or GEOS_V 305. Equivalency: GEOB_V 305.

Biogeographic concepts in understanding responses in ecosystems to environmental change at global, regional, and local scales. Conservation issues such as the loss of biodiversity and endangered species. Recommended prerequisites: one of BIOL_V 230, GEOB_V 207, GEOS_V 207, FRST_V 201. [3-2*-0] Credit will be granted for only one of GEOB_V 307 or GEOS_V 307. Equivalency: GEOB_V 307.

Field sampling, instrumentation, surveying, mapping techniques, and data analysis; mandatory multi-day field camp in May or June. Special fees and liability insurance are required.

The nature of atmospheric pollutants. The ability of the atmosphere to disperse, transform, and remove pollutants. Air pollution dispersion models. Air quality monitoring, criteria, and standards.

Hillslope and stream channel processes and their rates of operation. Analysis and modelling geomorphic processes and associated hazards at the watershed scale. Applications in geoscience and engineering.

Formation of ice masses and their evolution including snowpacks, glaciers, and ice sheets. Relationships between ice and climate including records of climate change, glacier dynamics and ice-related hazards. An interdisciplinary and cross-cultural overview of contemporary environmental issues, as they relate to gender equality and social justice challenges and initiatives that respond to ecological crises. Recommended: GRSJ 101.

Techniques of literary study, with emphasis on intersectionality and the ways in which gender is represented in literature and contributions of feminism and gender studies to literary studies.

How human rights are expressed in the Arts. Critical engagement with feminist, race and social justice scholarship, and activism.

Situates Asia in a global context and explores the complex relationships between gender, social structures, and social change.

Interdisciplinary exploration of the multiple intersections between gender and (neo)colonialism, racism, poverty, ableism, and heterosexism in a globalized world; historical and cross-cultural aspects, and the social construction of sex and gender, masculinity and femininity.

The intersections of gender, education, and work using sociological and economic frameworks. Recommended pre-requisites: either all of GRSJ 101, GRSJ 102 or third-year standing.
