Concepts and models of occupation, health, and illness are introduced and appraised. Narratives from persons with lived experience and interactive assignments are used for acquiring biopsychosocial information on health conditions that impact occupational performance across lifespan and diverse life experiences. [1-0-1.5].

To address inequities and meet the occupational needs of diverse communities, students will learn, critique and apply program development principles. Program development principles include needs assessment, program design, budgeting and resource planning, marketing, program evaluation, and proposal writing and presentation. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

Students acquire content relating to the virulence factors of the bacteria and the pathophysiology of the host while working through case scenarios on their own and in online groups. Students taking this course must be willing to engage in both self-directed and small-group learning.

Foundation in Canadian health care delivery systems and policies, with a focus on pharmaceutical policy and on comparison with other types of health care systems. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

Economic evaluation of health technologies, considering, in detail, the policy context for the use of economic evaluation. Prerequisite: SPPH_V 541. Or equivalent training. Equivalency: SPPH_V 549.

Moral problems in contemporary business and professional practice, general moral theory, the law, and policy formation. Corporate social and environmental responsibility, employee rights, preferential hiring and affirmative action programs, conflicts of interest, advertising, whistle blowing and self-regulation.

Moral problems arising in the health sciences, especially in medicine but also in biology, psychology, and social work. Topics include abortion, death and euthanasia, genetic engineering, behaviour modification, compulsory treatment, experimentation with human beings and animals, and the relationship between professionals and their patients, subjects or clients. No philosophical background is required.

Philosophical approaches to historical problems of inequality and social harm, with readings drawn from historical and contemporary sources. Topics to be studied may include slavery, colonialism, labour, and the position of women in society.

Concepts of law, constitution and sovereignty; law and morality; natural law theories and legal positivism; obligation, responsibility, and punishment. Prerequisite: Restricted to second- or higher-year standing.

Overview of Indigenous health in Canada and the role a pharmacist can have in collaborating with Indigenous communities in providing culturally safe care and healing This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading. Prerequisite: PHRM 171.

Application of integrated problem-solving skills to resolve increasingly complex drug-therapy problems in inpatient and/or health authority-based settings.
