Emerging technology in the areas of digital affect theory, cyborg feminism, critical digital humanities, critical race studies, surveillance studies, and queer game studies.

Critical examination of the gender dimension of globalization and the theories, discourse, and practices in international politics using gender analysis.

Interdisciplinary introduction to gender and health issues using selected theoretical frameworks.

Critical anti-colonial and feminist analyses of colonial and racial subjugation, as well as the many modalities of indigenous and minority resistance.

Conceptual tools of systems thinking, complexity and trans-systemics to aid understanding the dynamics of socialecological transformation and social innovation. These tools will be presented and complemented by experiences on Haida Gwaii that will foster an understanding of social change and system transformation for reconciliation. Complex problems. Theory of social-ecological resilience as applied to cross-cultural community settings, using case studies from communities on Haida Gwaii and other exceptional cases of community resilience.

An examination of the challenges and opportunities of developing and diversifying resilient resource dependent cross-cultural, rural communities using Haida Gwaii's comprehensive community planning as a case study.

Perspectives and methodologies applied to the conservation of marine environments in British Columbia.

Places issues and problems of current relevance such as disease, terrorism, drugs, or ethnic conflict in historical perspective. Each section will explore a single theme. Check with department for course offerings.

Changing ideas about humanity and rights. Considers the relationship between human rights and the nation-state, imperialism, and capitalism. Assesses the efforts to end large-scale human rights violations and the role of the United Nations.

Foundations of governance, with a focus on Indigenous governance in Canada. Topics include traditional governance, self-governance and natural resources governance.

Indigenous legal orders, Canada's constitutional framework, treaties and self-governance. Topics also cover the international context, and the implications of the evolving legal context for land management.

The theory and politics of gender and sexuality from Indigenous perspectives. Emphasis on decolonial and intersectional Indigenous feminisms and queer/two-spirit theory. Experiential, intensive land-based course designed and delivered in collaboration with academic faculty and Indigenous community partner(s). Students are eligible for Pass/Fail or percentage grading.

Systems science approaches encompassing geological, hydrological, ecological, atmospheric sciences, and energy systems to investigate a selected region of the world. Course location will vary; fee payable prior to field course.
