Communicating concepts of food systems and links to human and environmental health through writing, elements of argumentation, evaluating evidence, and searching for and citing references to back up claims; small-class experience. Introduction to tools needed for data analysis of the economic, ecological, health, and scientific components of land and food systems. [3-0-1] Prerequisite: One of MATH 100, MATH 102, MATH 104, MATH 110, MATH 120, MATH 180, MATH 184.

Project-based application of the principles and processes of community food security. Emphasis on developing skills required to address economic, ecological, social, and technological components of managed landscapes, agri-food systems, and communities comprising the land, food, nutrition and health continuum. Prerequisite: LFS 250.

Current and emerging issues relevant within the general context of land and water systems, and the significance of professional credibility and exposure.

Urbanization impacts on water resources with a focus on rainwater management, water quality, point and non-point sources of pollution, drinking water and waste water, riparian buffer zones, cumulative effects, and application of beneficial management practices. Equivalency: SOIL_V 516.

Historical framework of importance of water basins, legacy between water basins and human evolution, effects of agriculture, forestry, industry and urbanization.

Manufacturing and the net-zero energy transition; renewable, low-carbon and sustainable energy and electricity generation; energy, electricity transport, storage and batteries; hydrogen economy; carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS). [3-0-0]. Prerequisite: Third-year standing or greater.

Causes and effects of air pollution in the context of technology and society. Topics include: impact of air pollutants on air quality and climate, atmospheric science, public policy, collective action, environmental justice, science communication, economic externalities, and ethical engineering design. Recommended pre-requisite: third-year standing. [3-0-0]. Prerequisite: Second-year standing.

A capstone course to provide students experience in the design/development of practical energy and environment devices. Projects are provided by local industry and engineering research laboratories. Patient attitudes toward genetic counselling; the grieving process in response to pregnancy loss, death, and disability; risk perception, attitudes toward prenatal testing, dealing with results of genetic testing, crisis counselling, giving bad news; ethical dilemmas; legal and professional issues. [0-2]. Prerequisite: MEDG_V 560. And acceptance into M.Sc. Genetic Counselling program.

Critical examination and discussion of contemporary research literature concerning the impact of host-associated microbiomes on host development, health and disease with a focus on humans. Priority given to students in Microbiology and Immunology specializations. [3-0-0] Prerequisite: Either (a) MICB 302 and one of MICB 308, MICB 325, BIOL 335; or (b) BIOT 380. Theory, knowledge, strategies, and skills of person-centered counselling including family systems, trauma theory, theory, grief counselling, motivational interviewing skills, self-awareness and mindfulness, interprofessional communication, and cultural competency in continuity of care. [3-0-0].

Introduction to diagnostics related to cellular and humoral immune responses in pregnant women and newborns, the properties of viruses, epidemiology, the principles of bacterial pathogenesis, and related physiologic responses.

Research designs used in midwifery research, types of studies reported in the midwifery and health care literature, research methodology and basic principles of epidemiology, biostatistics and social research.
