An integrated study of the theory and experimental findings of neuronal synaptic plasticity, including underlying molecular mechanisms and their role in cellular systems, cognitive biology and disease. [3-0-0] Prerequisite: One of CAPS 305, CAPS 301, NSCI 300.

Major discoveries and current advancements that are revolutionizing our understanding of the biology, disease states and therapeutic approaches for metabolic and reproductive disorders, stress and endocrine disorders including diabetes. [3-0-0]. Prerequisites: CAPS_V 305 and CAPS_V 306 and CAPS_V 310.

Planetary thermodynamics, energy system evolution, role of renewable energy sources. Alternative energy technologies. Solar, wind, small-scale hydro, tidal, geothermal, and biochemical energy, electromechanical conversion processes. Techno-economic assessment of alternative energy technologies.

Energy/environment/society interactions; development of energy resources; energy demand and its determinants; policy dimension of energy and climate change; impacts on ecosystems; life cycle analysis; impact assessment and other tools for quantitative and qualitative evaluation of alternative energy sources. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

Engineering concepts of demand side management (DSM), energy auditing, analysis of buildings and industrial equipment, measurement & verification, and system data analysis. Foundational concepts and design equations for unit operations in chemical and biological systems. Examples related to clean energy systems are emphasized. [3-0-2*] Prerequisite: CHBE_V 241 and one of CHBE_V 251, CIVL_V 215. Not for credit for CHBE students.

Laboratory experiments to illustrate key concepts and measurement techniques in environmental engineering as used by engineers. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading. [1-4-0] Corequisite: One of CHBE 373, CIVL 406.

Legal, environmental and physicochemical aspects of industrial water pollution and its abatement will be surveyed; techniques for design of wastewater treatment processes currently used in industry; case studies from chemical and process industries will be considered in detail. 8-month project-based course, integrating chemical and biological engineering concepts with economics, life cycle analysis and health and safety considerations in the design of major biological processes. [2-0-4; 2-0-4] Prerequisite: All of CHBE_V 241, CHBE_V 345, CHBE_V 356, CHBE_V 376, CHBE_V 381. Corequisite: CHBE_V 481.

Strategy for the conceptual design of industrial chemical and biological processes; rules of thumb for chemical engineers, simulation to assist process synthesis, reactor-separator network synthesis, introduction to product design and molecular structure design, efficiency and sustainability in the chemical industry.

Fundamentals of cutting-edge bioanalysis technologies with an emphasis on applications in health and the environment. Concepts and calculations involving: separations, mass transfer, reaction kinetics, mixing, electrochemistry, and others. Analysis tools employed include: limits of detection, sensitivity, specificity, and other measures. Credit will be granted for only one of CHBE 472 or CHBE 572. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading. [3-0-0] Prerequisite: Fourth year standing in BASc or BSc.

Stoichiometry, thermodynamics and kinetics of electrode reactions; conductivity and mass transport in electrolytes; material, energy and voltage balances; design of electrosynthesis, electrorecovery of metals, and energy generation of batteries and fuel cells. Credit will be granted for only one of CHBE 477, CHBE 577. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading. [3-0-0] Prerequisite: All of CHBE 220, CHBE 241, CHBE 346 for students enrolled in CHBE or fourth-year standing in BASc.

Supply and use of conventional and alternative fuels and energy. Design and operation of unit operations for processing of fossil fuels, biomass, and other energy sources. Environmental considerations of energy use. that address climate change and sustainability (water usage, environmental footprint, resource use, etc.). Credit will be granted for only one of CHBE 483, CHBE 583. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading. [3-0-0] Prerequisite: Third-year standing or higher in BASc or BSc.

How chemical and biological waste impact the environment. Physico-chemical, thermal, and biological methods for minimizing, isolating and sustainably treating solid waste and wastewater, including conversion to bioproducts/ industrial products, energy and clean water. Recommended prerequisite: All of CHBE_V 241, CHBE_V 244, CHBE_V 370. [3-0-0] Prerequisite: Third-year or higher standing in BASc. or BSc.

Literature search, planning, equipment design for an individual research project leading to a written proposal and oral presentation. Topic to be chosen from a selection of environmental topics offered by the department. [0-2-0] Prerequisite: All of CHBE_V 362, CHBE_V 364.

Importance of chemistry in society. Detailed case studies drawn from modern chemistry: human health, energy, commodity chemicals, materials, green chemistry, agriculture. [3-0-0] Prerequisite: one of CHEM_V 203, CHEM_V 211, CHEM_V 223, CHEM_V 233, CHEM_V 260.

Contemporary materials chemistry, including design and synthesis of materials for energy, electronics, and health applications. [3-0-0] Prerequisite: CHEM 327.
