How It Works

The program is open to full-time UBC graduate students from any program or discipline. As a Sustainability Scholar, you work under the guidance of a mentor on an applied research project that supports their organization's sustainability goals.

Fund scholars

Climate change, biodiversity loss, and growing inequality are some of the most urgent issues facing our world today. Support from donors will allow scholars to make a direct impact through organizations doing the on-the-ground work needed to address climate change and other critical sustainability challenges.

Fraser Estuary Research Collaborative (FERC)

A new stream in the Sustainability Scholars Program focusing on applied research with the goal of restoring and protecting the endangered Fraser Estuary.

Project Library

This project scopes an integrated flood management strategy for the neighborhoods of Bridgeview and South Westminster in Surrey, BC. The report includes a history of how both the high levels of flood risk and resilience have developed in the area, a review of relevant local and global integrated flood plan case studies, and key recommendations for future integrated flood management planning in the area as climate change increases flood uncertainty.

Charlotte Milne

This project analyzes the City of Courtenay's development approvals, servicing standards, and tree-related bylaws to identify structural causes of servicing tree conflicts under development legislation. Using policy review, process mapping, and practitioner interviews, it evaluates gaps in electrical servicing coordination, tree data, and procedural timing. The work proposes modernization strategies, earlier inputs, clearer standards, and digital workflows to align urban forest protection with densification.

This project models redevelopment potential across the Fleetwood neighbourhood in Surrey, ranking parcels by likelihood of uptake and mapping which lots are expected to build out first under projected population growth to 2050. Includes corrected capacity-to-parcel allocation methodology and scenario-based visualizations showing high, medium, and low growth build-out, as well as a literature review of potential alternate methodologies.

Resistance to the legally required Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) implementation in Canada's forestry sector persists. The extensive research for this project identifies and assesses FPIC implementation barriers in Alberta, British Columbia, and New Brunswick. Federal and provincial forestry laws, Aboriginal and treaty right laws, and international legal and voluntary commitments were reviewed to assess the need for a Canadian Centre for Social Excellence to advance FPIC implementation in forestry.

Monica Sarkies

This project developed practical Operations and Maintenance (O&M) guidelines and a prioritization tool to improve the climate resilience of District of North Vancouver (DNV) municipal buildings. Its purpose was to identify climate-related risks to key building systems, recommend cost-effective O&M practices, and help staff prioritize actions for short-term and annual maintenance planning. The project also considered six major climate hazards and building-system vulnerability, reliability, and criticality.

This project developed an implementation guide for Power Efficient Design (PED) strategies to accelerate decarbonization of existing multi-unit residential buildings at UBC. It examines how space conditioning, domestic hot water systems, centralized ventilation, energy management, and energy storage can support electrification while managing peak electrical demand. The project also identifies Canadian Electrical Code barriers and proposes practical implementation pathways.

This project examines the potential for the City of New Westminster to leverage Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) data to develop and implement successful demand-side management and demand response programs. It creates an implementation roadmap, and recommends phased implementation, customer engagement, AMI data integration, workforce readiness, and data-driven program evaluation to mitigate peak demand, enhance grid reliability, and enable long-term climate and energy objectives.

This project identifies opportunities to convert aging local roads into ecological corridors, supporting Vancouver's climate emergency commitments and 11% road space reallocation target. Drawing on case studies from municipalities worldwide, it highlights effective approaches to reallocation. A mapping analysis of the City's internal datasets produced a recommended list of 17 local road candidates for transformation within the next 5 to 10 years.

This report synthesizes interviews and conducts an economic multiplier analysis to assess the feasibility and equity impact of Vancouver's Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) policy. The findings show that developers perceive ambiguity and financial risk, social enterprises seek stronger targets and access, and monitors cite procurement constraints. Recommendations call for clearer language, a clearer definition of "local," dedicated CBA coordinators, unbundled contracts, improved monitoring, and more incentives for developers.

This project analyzes pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation data from 5,923 Saanich homes (2007 to 2024) to understand community retrofit activity and its role in meeting climate goals of 50% GHG reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2050. The study evaluates retrofit trends, fuel switching, and upgrade bundles, providing insights to guide the District of Saanich's 2025 Climate Plan Update and support local energy retrofit programs and policy design.

This study examines shared micromobility systems in cities with multiple operators to identify common challenges and the strategies used to address them. Drawing on literature reviews and outreach with micromobility experts through surveys and interviews, the findings provide lessons for the City of Vancouver. These insights inform practical steps to support the long-term viability and success of both the public bike share and the newly launched shared e-scooter system in Vancouver.

This report presents a bottom-up assessment of non-road engine (NRE) populations in Metro Vancouver to support the development of a more accurate and regionally representative air emissions inventory of greenhouse gases (GHG) and health harming contaminants. Non-road engines, used in sectors such as construction, commercial, manufacturing, and yard and garden contribute significantly to local air pollution and climate impacts, yet their emissions are not as accurately quantified compared to on-road vehicles (Hagan, 2022). The study draws on structured interviews, data collection from regional equipment suppliers and dealers, and public and institutional datasets from sources such as Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to cross-validate and enrich the data.

This project advances the mapping of Canada's remaining primary forests--defined as natural forests that have grown without major anthropogenic impacts, such as logging, urban development, or mining. Using national and regional scale datasets, the project aimed to produce an updated framework for a spatially accurate and thematically comprehensive national map of primary forests. This framework can serve as a foundation for ongoing forest conservation, policy support, and ecological assessment across Canada.
