Society has collapsed, and humanity's last survivors (the audience) are about to launch a life raft in order to seek a new home where they can rebuild civilization!
One seat on the raft remains: whom do you select to join you?
At the inaugural UBC Okanagan Life Raft Debate, five UBC professors will argue that their discipline is the one indispensable area of expertise that the new civilization will need to survive. One professor will take on the role of devil’s advocate and argue that the survivors should actually choose no one, and that their new society will be better off without a university professor aboard.
The audience will vote to decide the winner, who will be presented with the highly coveted Life Raft Debate Paddle.
Participants include:
- Christine Schreyer, associate professor of anthropology
- Stephen McNeil, associate professor of chemistry
- Denise Kenney, associate professor of interdisciplinary performance
- Marianne Legault in the role of Devil's Advocate, associate professor of French
- Ray Taheri, senior instructor of engineering
- A professor of psychology (TBA)
