The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP30) summit is taking place in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21, 2025. The summit brings together countries, civil society, companies and people on the frontline of climate change to accelerate action on the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
This year, the COP30 presidency is inviting the international community to join a global “mutirão” against climate change. The term comes from “Motirõ” in Tupi-Guarani, one of the most extensive Indigenous language families in South America. It refers to a community coming together to work on a shared task. It is a call for collective effort towards a shared goal – global cooperation for advancing climate action goals.
UBC has observer status for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (UNFCCC COP), which means that UBC receives an allocation of observer badges for representatives to witness the official negotiation space and engage in the many side events taking place during the conference.
In past years, most observer delegates at COP have represented organizations from the Global North. For COP29, the UNFCCC began reallocating the number of badges granted to institutions in wealthier countries to increase access for participants located in the Global South. This year, UBC expects to receive primarily virtual observer badges for COP30.
Current UBC students, staff, and faculty are now invited to apply to join UBC's virtual delegation at COP30.
Applications will close on July 8, 2025. Applicants will be informed about selections by September. Successful applicants will receive one of UBC’s virtual badges to witness COP30, observe global negotiations, and be in a key space of global climate action.
