The goal is to assist all educators to make a contribution to transforming Aboriginal education in order to improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal/Indigenous learners and enhance learning for all students.

This course introduces students to a number of contemporary social issues in the field of education. In addition to reviewing the general social functions of schools, we will also focus on selected themes and issues, including: race/ethnicity, gender, class, and (dis)ability. Other topics may be explored depending on student interest on and on legal and political developments at the time of delivery.

This course we will discuss influential theories of education and social justice, and their connections. (“Social justice” is interpreted here as a contraction of its expanded form, “social and ecological justice”: we may study accounts of justice pertaining to interactions between persons, as well as to interactions with non-human others.) This course aims to prepare students to engage with Indigenous ways of knowing, relating and being in generative and ethical ways. The course is divided into three parts (historical, decolonize & pedagogy/curriculum), corresponding to the three weeks of the course. Cultural, political and spiritual perspectives related to Indigenous education, relationship to the land and the trauma of colonization will be explored. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.
