Kim Bernard received her PhD in sub-Antarctic zooplankton ecology from Rhodes University, South Africa. After several years working in science management in South Africa, she returned to the Antarctic as a Post-Doc with the Palmer Antarctica Long-Term Ecological Research project though the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Bernard continues her research on Antarctic zooplankton as an Assistant Professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. She has participated in numerous research cruises to the Antarctic and has spent 5 summer seasons at Palmer Station, Western Antarctic Peninsula. The primary motivation behind her research is to understand how natural and anthropogenic forces influence plankton community structure and trophic interactions in marine pelagic ecosystems.
