Domoic acid (DA) induces acute gastrointestinal illness including Diarrhea and Short term memory loss (Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning). This disease was first recognized in Canada in 1989, which causes mortality and morbidity. In later stages, toxicological regulation enforced and field sampling for marine food including shellfish started, and as a result no outbreaks have been reported since then. DA sampling in Canadian West Coast and challenges related to the current toxicological regulation will be discussed.
