People of the Saltwater is a combination of personal narrative and ethnographic monograph. This talk explores the lessons First Nations societies hold for fisheries and oceans sciences. Drawing upon the intellectual tradition of Gitxaała Nation and the case studies of Gitxaała fisheries this talk highlights problems of mainstream fisheries and oceans sciences and how traditional ecological knowledge is the critical key toward our collective future.

Charles R. Menzies (Gitxaala) is a professor of anthropology and director of the Ethnographic Film Unit at the University of British Columbia. He is the editor of Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Natural Resource Management (Nebraska, 2006), the author of Red Flags and Lace Coiffes: Identity and Survival in a Breton Village, co-author of BC First Nations Studies, and coeditor of the journal Collaborative Anthropologies.
