Sat, September 17, 2016 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM UBC FARM. $40 ($32 for registered students -- valid student ID is required) + GST. The workshop will begin with showing an observation hive and pointing out the activity on the different parts of the frame. This will be followed by a discussion of the life cycle of honeybees, how bees produce wax, and propolis, including its benefits to both bees and humans. The hands on portion of the workshop will involve melted beeswax. Participants will be able to choose from a number of essential oils to add to a few other ingredients to make lip balm, and have an opportunity to pour tea lights.

About the Instructor: Brian Saunders is a secondary teacher in Burnaby, and has been keeping bees on Lower Mainland rooftops and fields for 6 years. In the fall, he will finish the last course in a Master Beekeeper program and gain that credential. Last year he completed the BC Honey Producers' Association/ Ministry of Agriculture Instructors' certification course. Next season he will be starting a beekeeping program for incarcerated youth at Fraser Park correctional facility in Burnaby.
