Fri, February 5, 2016 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Science Building. Free . EESc Physical Geography Seminar Series Presents: John Ryan, Project Geologist at Teck Resources Limited.

Date: Friday, February 5th, 2016
Time: 12:00-1:00 p.m.
Room: SCI 374

12:00-12:30 Part 1: Geology of the Valley Porphyry Copper-Molybdenum Deposit, Highland Valley.

An overview look at the Valley Deposit, one of three actively mined deposits within the Highland Valley Copper camp. The lithology, alteration mineralization and paragenesis of the deposit will be reviewed. Modern techniques and insights have proven to redefine the understanding of a mature copper district.

12:30-1:00 Part 2: Application of Lithogeochemistry and Hyperspectral analysis in economic geology.

A review of techniques that are valuable for new geologists to be familiar with. Lithogeo-chemical methods focusing on the use of immobile and mobile elements are crucial in under-standing complex lithological and alteration relationships. Hyperspectral analysis is an emerging technique which collects data from the light minerals reflect within the infrared portion of the light spectra. This spectral signature can be interpreted to identify minerals with great precision and accuracy. This can be at the scale of core and hand samples or continental mapping through the use of satellites.
