Presented by UBC Sustainability Hub, the Student Sustainability FEST! introduced students to sustainability learning opportunities at UBC, featuring live music, free snacks, and hands on workshops.

On September 24 the Sustainability Hub invited UBC students to the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability for the Student Sustainability FEST!

The event featured presentations, informative displays, and community-building activities that connected undergraduate and graduate students with sustainability-oriented courses, resources, and initiatives at UBC. It was held in conjunction with the Sustainability Scholars Conference, which invites students from the Scholars program to present on applied sustainability research projects conducted with regional partners.

Over 300 students joined our first ever FEST!

The event kicked off with the Sustainability Scholars Conference keynote, presented by George P.R. Benson (Senior Manager of Economic Development and Market Transformation, Zero Emissions Innovation Centre) and welcomed over 300 FEST! participants to the building over the course of the afternoon. From the conference, students wove their way to the Food Hub Market where reps from Agora, the Bike Kitchen, UBC Botany Enthusiasts Club, and Sprouts were waiting to share how to engage with sustainability through co-curricular activities.

Exhibits from academics, students, and staff highlighted sustainability education opportunities

On the second floor atrium, students connected with staff and faculty exhibitors including Campus + Community Planning, Centre for Climate Justice, Centre for Community Engaged Learning, Climate Studies and Action Certificate, Rapid Air Movement Network, UBC Career Centre, UBC Library Climate Action Committee, UBC Slow Fashion Season, and UBC Zero Waste Market.

Keeping the energy high, students ducked onto the rooftop patio to enjoy student live music from the Blank Vinyl Project or participated in workshops in the Wellbeing Lab, hosted by reps from the Sustainability Hub Catalyst Program, Sustainability Ambassadors Program, and Climate Emergency Week.

The smell of fresh popcorn invited students up to the third floor atrium to claim a complimentary bag from the CIRS popcorn cart, complete with hot honey seasoning. The perfect combination for an afternoon filled with discovery and connection!
