UBC Reads Sustainability with Rueben George
Join us in person and online for the opening event of UBC’s Sustainable Development Goals Month - a conversation with Sundance Chief Rueben George about his bestselling book, It Stops Here: Standing Up For Our Lands, Our Waters and Our People, moderated by UBC Associate Professor Dr. Shannon Leddy. The conversation will be followed by a book signing from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.
Climate activism cannot be done in a vacuum. Climate justice requires that we change the destructive dominant social system that led us to this tipping point, too.
Rueben George has been a leading voice for over a decade against the Trans Mountain Pipeline in Tsleil-Waututh Nation territories. His memoir relates his uncompromising stand against Canadian systems of prioritizing control, profit and resources over responsibility to lands, waters and people. Through his book, Rueben showcases how Indigenous law and jurisdiction are essential for sustainability and wellbeing.
As seen in the many ways Rueben’s actions advance Sustainable Development Goals (including SDG 3 and 10-16), Indigenous law and jurisdiction are also deeply important to the interconnected approach we need to fulfil the SDGs and to address socio-ecological crises worldwide.

Climate Conversation: Compound Hazards (Kelowna)
As the climate changes, both the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events is also increasing.
Heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, floods and other extreme events present serious hazards that may result in either loss or damage to people and infrastructure. The Insurance Bureau of Canada recently announced that 2024 shattered records for the costliest year for severe weather-related losses in Canadian history, reaching 8.5 billion dollars. A compounding hazard is the combination of two or more hazards that occur either simultaneously or one after the other, and which increase overall risk.
In this two-part series of Climate Conversations presented jointly by the Disaster Resilience Research Network and the Climate Solutions Research Collective, we will hear from researchers studying compound hazards from a number of disciplinary perspectives. Each will share from their research experience, leaving opportunity for questions and dialogue. The first session will be based in Vancouver with researchers joining both in-person and online on February 26; this second session is based in Kelowna and will be in-person.

Join us for an exciting conversation with Grace Nosek about her book, Rootbound, and the unique role that climate fiction and art can play in inspiring youth and driving climate action. This is your chance to ignite your passion as a climate advocate and reimagine the future.
Grace Nosek is a passionate scholar, storyteller, and climate justice advocate. Her PhD and postdoctoral research explore how the fossil fuel industry undermines democracy and, importantly, how we can empower youth to take action. Rootbound, a joyful YA climate fantasy novel, is a product of this work and uses storytelling to challenge and counter the false narratives propagated by the fossil fuel industry.
Grace will be joined in discussion by Dr. Amanda Giang, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Modelling for Policy, and UBC student Amy Leung, BA Geography.

Caring for Others: Intimacy and Asian Life in the Archives of Occupation
Day after day, our social media feeds vibrate with the names of the killed, the missing, and the threatened in zones of slow and quick death across the globe. In this talk, Nadine Attewell will reflect on the intimate labour such lists index and also demand, thinking with archives generated at a different deathly conjuncture, during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong between 1941 and 1945. What forms of attention are required to make sense of these documents, at once spare and sprawling?
Drawing on postcolonial, Black feminist, and Indigenous approaches to the archive, we will practice reading lists of the missing, dead, and imprisoned, of possible allies and likely traitors, of dependents and next of kin, as traces of people’s relation work for survival under conditions of extreme political, material, and bodily duress. To Japanese and British observers, Asian Hong Kongers’ practices of relation mattered principally insofar as they hindered or furthered the reproduction of imperial life. We will consider, rather, the significance of people’s efforts to care for one another in defiance of imperial norms of protectability, improvising supports for life in the face of state abandonment and mass death

Vancouver Youth Climate Corp Town Hall
Want a job to help address the climate emergency? Want YOUR representatives in Parliament to make that a reality? Join the Vancouver Youth Climate Corps Town Hall! Hosted by youth from your community, we'll discuss the transformative potential of a Youth Climate Corps. It’s time for us to be part of the solution to climate change, while building real, green jobs for our generation!
With this town hall, we aim to highlight the intersection of climate action, affordability, and youth employment, all the while advocating for a Youth Climate Corps, a bold public program that would provide 2 years of training and guaranteed employment in climate work to any young person who wants it.
We want to center discussions on the YCC as an example of how climate action can create well-paying jobs, address cost-of-living concerns, and build solidarity between the climate movement and the working class. We also want elected officials to make this connection and listen to all the youth demanding this urgent climate solution. Bringing together students, climate and labour organizers, policymakers, and community members, the town hall will bridge lived experiences and political pressure to advance the Youth Climate Corps during this key political moment.
Come to the town hall for:
- A panel of community members working on we will have a guided discussion on the importance of funding a Youth Climate Corps this year
- Art in the form of graphic recording, an art gallery, and live music.
- Food shared in community
- Community conversation after the panel
- A chance to connect with elected representatives over the needs of youth in our community

Book Launch: Love in a F*cked up World Book Launch with Dean Spade
Join UBC’s Centre for Community Engaged Learning and SFU’s Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies to celebrate the launch of Dean Spade’s new book, Love in a F*cked Up World.
Lifelong activist and educator Dean Spade dares us to decide that our interpersonal actions are not separate from our politics of liberation and resistance. Many activist projects and resistance groups fall apart because people treat each other poorly, trying desperately to live out the cultural myths about dating and relationships that we are fed from an early age.

Sticking Together in Hard Times
How do we care for each other, our comrades and communities, and build resistance under extreme conditions of state violence, organized abandonment, imperialism, and fascism?

This engaging workshop will cover concrete tools such as organizing mutual aid, group decision-making process, how to prevent and address conflict, and how to care for one another.
Organized by Dean Spade, Weaving Our Worlds Collective and the UBC Centre for Community Engaged Learning.
