Espalier is a pruning technique of training fruit trees into interesting shapes. Brendan Fisher will discuss the cultural requirements, how to get started and how the trees are trained and pruned. This is a great skill for individuals who would like to grow fruit trees, but have a limited amount of space on their property.
Instructor: Brendan Fisher, UBC Botanical Garden Horticulturist - Brendan completed his Diploma in Ornamental Horticulture at the Niagara Parks Botanical Garden and School Of Horticulture in the spring of 2005, having previously achieved a Certificate in Landscape Horticulture from Capilano College. While studying at Capilano College Brendan became certified with the International Society of Arboriculture in 1999 and has maintained it since then with great admiration for the big plants as well as the herbaceous. His career path has taken him though municipal garden operations such as the City of North Vancouver Parks Board and UBC Plant Operations, resort and golf destinations at the Banff Springs Hotel and Niagara Parks Botanical Garden and private garden and arborist companies in Whistler, Vancouver and Ontario. Brendan joined UBC Botanical Garden in January 2006 and his current responsibilities include the planning and care of the UBC Food Garden and maintenance of all the surrounding espalier fruit trees.
