Speaker: Dr. Andrea Frommel, Assistant Professor, UBC Land and Food Systems

This talk aims to integrate two traditionally disparate fields, climate change and aquaculture. With the rapidly expanding aquaculture industry, the future of the industry is dependent on its sustainability. One of the major bottlenecks in aquaculture production is the poor survival and growth in the early life stages. My past work has focussed on the effects of elevated CO2 concentrations consistent with ocean acidification, upwelling and tidal mixing on the survival, health, condition and growth of larval fishes. In aquaculture, high density rearing environments and land-based recirculating systems routinely accumulate CO2 levels 10-fold above those found in nature and predicted with ocean acidification. At LFS, I will research ways to increase survival, health, growth and welfare of the early life-stages of fish in aquaculture in the context of sustainability and environmental soundness.
