UBC’s efforts to manage our energy consumption addresses the triple bottom line of positive environmental, social, and economic impacts. Since 2000, UBC’s energy management and conservation projects have decreased electricity consumption on campus by 55 GWh and natural gas consumption by 557,000 GJ annually. Our long-term goal is to consume energy more efficiently and to decouple energy consumption from GHG emissions, reducing our climate impact.
ACADEMIC DISTRICT ENERGY SYSTEM
The Academic District Energy System Steam to Hot Water Conversion Project replaced 14 kilometres of 90-year-old steam piping, and connected to more than 160 buildings.

Since 2011, UBC’s energy conservation projects have reduced annual campus electrical use by 16 gigawatt hours (GWh). This is the equivalent to shutting down our campus for 3.5 weeks, and taking 1,500 cars off the road.
