Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a third-party certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.
LEED promotes a holistic approach to sustainability by recognizing building performance in five key areas of human and environmental health, including:
- Sustainable site development
- Water efficiency
- Energy efficiency
- Materials selection
- Indoor environmental quality
LEED certification is based on an independent assessment of total points achieved in the above categories. Four levels of certification can be granted: certified, silver, gold and platinum.
UBC's Vancouver campus has 31 LEED Gold or higher standard buildings.
SUPPORTING LEED AT UBC
UBC is accelerating our transformation to high-performing green buildings on campus. LEED® Gold certification is mandatory for all new construction and major renovations for institutional buildings at UBC.
But we’ve also taken the LEED standard one step further by adding mandatory green building requirements into UBC’s Technical Guidelines – our building code for quality and performance in design, construction and renovation.
LEED Canada 2009
We provide a UBC LEED Implementation Guide for LEED Canada 2009 to guide projects registered under applicable rating systems until LEED 2009 projects on campus are complete and certified.
We’ve also developed UBC LEED Implementation Guides for LEED v4 aimed at design teams working to achieve LEED Gold certification on new UBC building projects. It has been developed to support all UBC policies and in particular is aligned with the UBC Vancouver Campus Plan, the Technical Guidelines, and the Climate Action Plan.
The guides provide helpful information as well indicating which credits are mandatory, optional, or not available at UBC.
LEED BUILDINGS AT UBC
As of 2008, all publicly-owned new construction and major renovation projects over 600 m2 in British Columbia must achieve LEED Gold certification. UBC green building policies are key to ensuring that green building practices are implemented in a manner that helps us achieve UBC’s sustainability goals.
We provide a full list of LEED Certified and Registered Buildings in our Green Building Directory.
