Valid ID card required. | Child $7. Join us for a family-focused bumblebee survey at UBC Botanical Garden. Bring your curiosity and your lunch as we parade the Garden and search for flowers and their fuzzy bumblebee companions. Participants will be guided by experts Brian Campbell, UBC Botanical Beeologist in Residence, and Marika van Reeuwyk, from the Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA) through a citizen science program and will;
· Learn about the diversity of bumblebees in the Lower Mainland
· Identify plants and bumblebee species
· Discover the benefits of pollination services
Instructors:
Brian Campbell has been keen on bees for over 20 years and has an extensive history teaching beekeeping, native bee identification and conservation and as a Master Beekeeper. Additionally, Brian well known for his active and collaborative work in pollinator conservation projects in the Lower Mainland. He is UBC Botanical Garden’s Beeologist in Residence, where develops pollinator-friendly gardening practices and helps tend to the Garden’s wild bees. Brian has a keen eye and is able to identify bees and their behaviour throughout the Garden.
Marika van Reeuwyk manages EYA’s pollinator biodiversity initiatives. Marika grew up in the small town of Agassiz, BC. University pursuits drew her to Vancouver and its intrinsic beauty has kept her here ever since. While exploring the forest and ocean during her work at a remote youth outdoor camp near Deep Cove, Marika reunited with her childhood sense of wonder for the world. She has grown a particular fondness for insects (or “tiny aliens” as she enjoys calling them) and frequently acts as the designated bug catcher amongst her circles. Marika completed her Environmental Studies diploma at Langara College and moved on to UBC’s Applied Biology, Plant & Soil Sciences program. For her undergraduate thesis, she investigated the status of wild bee populations at the UBC Farm. She is a life-long learner and has worked with diverse ecology and environmental education-based organizations across the city.
Notes: This is a walking tour. Please dress for the weather, including footwear for all terrains. Free Visitor Parking for 3 hours, provided you enter your license plate.
What to bring: A litterless lunch as we will have our picnic in the Garden after our tour. If it rains, we can use the covered Taylor Plaza adjacent to the Food Garden. Bring a magnifying glass and a camera to see the bee!
Cancellation Policies: A $5.00 processing fee per attendee is charged if cancellation notice is less than 7 days prior to your scheduled program. There is no fee for transferring the registration to another person. Cancellations can be made by contacting garden.programs@ubc.ca. In the event that a program is cancelled by UBC Botanical Garden, we will offer the option of transferring to another program or obtaining a full refund.
