1. Contest

1.1    The University of British Columbia (“UBC”) is a sponsor of the UBC2030 Competition (the “Competition”). 

1.2    This Competition will be run from September 27, 2020 and will close for entries at 23:59pm on October 25, 2020 (the “Submission Deadline”), and the winner will be selected on November 13, 2020.

2. Eligibility

The Competition is open to individuals or teams of up to five (5) individuals representing a student group or club, each of whom must be a current UBC graduate student, undergraduate student in good standing, full-time or part-time, or recently graduated alumni (on or after November 1, 2019). 

A “student in good standing” at UBC is set out in the UBC calendar as students who pass all courses or attain a sessional average of 55% or more as long as they did not have a failed standing in any previous session. 

Teams are encouraged to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds or areas of study. 

3. Concept

Individuals and teams will be asked to come up with a creative response to the question: “What will sustainability at UBC look like in 2030?”. They will submit their unique ideas for review by a panel of UBC judges drawn from faculty, staff, and students.

4. How to Enter

4.1    No purchase necessary. Only one entry per person or team. This Competition is open to entrants residing in Canada during the contest and who are the age of majority in their province of residence, excluding Quebec residents (“Entrant(s)”). Employees and faculty members of UBC are not eligible to enter this Competition. 

4.2    Entrants may enter this Competition by completing an online form on the website https://sustain.ubc.ca/ubc2030 and include a link to their artistic submission which can take the form of (but is not limited to) a 30-second video clip; a photo series; a mock newspaper/magazine cover; a song; or multimedia art.

4.3    The registration form must include prescribed information about each team member and address the following questions:
(a)    Individual / team member name, program, email, and phone number; 
(b)    What sustainability challenge(s) does your idea address? [no longer than 150 words]; 
(c)    How have you creatively expressed what this idea could look like? [and include a link to your creative response e.g. video, images, social media posts, etc.]; 
(d)    Each completed registration form must be submitted online to UBC at https://sustain.ubc.ca/ubc2030 before the Submission Deadline.
Once submitted, all registration forms become the property of UBC and will not be returned. All registration forms will be reviewed, and any registration forms that are deemed to be late, illegible, incomplete, inaccurate, inappropriate, offensive, plagiarized, and otherwise, will be disqualified. The determination of whether a registration form is illegible, incomplete, offensive, late, etc. will be made by the panel judges in its sole discretion and cannot be challenged.

5. Judging Criteria

5.1    The judging criteria for the Competition can be found on the following website: https://sustain.ubc.ca/ubc2030

5.2    Each submission form and creative materials will be judged out of one hundred (100) points using the following criteria for assessment:
A.    Sustainability Impact: the proposed idea promises real and persistent impact and demonstrate balance of social, environmental, and economic success. (25 points); 
B.    Creativity/Originality of Ideas: proposal is original and unique; the idea has not been executed before at UBC or the idea suggests a new way to look at the idea (25 points); 
C.    Feasibility: the idea has potential to be implemented at UBC in the future (25 points); and  
D.    Project Quality: the ideas are communicated and articulated clearly and effectively. The submission clearly captures or demonstrates the idea through selected multimedia format. (25 points).

Application of the judging criteria and decisions related to disqualification are made by the judges in their sole discretion and are not subject to appeal or challenge.

6. How to Win

6.1    Winners will be selected by the panel of judges on November 13, 2020, and will be announced on November 25, 2020 at approximately 4pm PST . 

7. Prizes

7.1    There will be five (5) prizes awards as follows:

(a)    $500 Patagonia gift card for one winning individual; 
(b)    Arc’Teryx Beta LT Jacket for one winning individual; 
(c)    $250 Canadian Dollars for one winning individual student; 
(d)    UBC Farm/Botanical Garden/Bookstore kit for one winning individual; and
(e)    $500 Canadian Dollars for the winning student group. 

7.2    The prize must be accepted as awarded. No substitutions of the prizes are permitted except by  UBC at its discretion. UBC reserves the right to substitute any of the prize with other prizes of equal or greater value if any prize cannot be awarded as described for any reason. 

7.3    UBC will require winners to sign a liability/publicity release, including a consent to UBC posting the winner’s name and photograph on its website. If a winner fails to return the consent documents within the time specified by UBC, they will forfeit their prize and an alternate winner will be selected.

8. General Rules

8.1    By participating in this Competition, each entrant and winner agrees to: (a) be bound by these Official Contest Rules and the decisions of UBC; and (b) release and hold harmless UBC, and its  Boards of Governors, officers, employees, and agents from and against any and all liabilities, losses, claims, demands, costs and expenses (including lawyer’s fees and litigation expenses on a solicitor and own client basis) whatsoever to which any of them may become subject arising from any actions or omissions by the entrant. 

8.2    By participating in this Competition, each entrant and winner agrees that UBC may post the winner’s name on its website.

8.3    The decisions of UBC in relation to this Competition will be final and binding on all entrants. 

8.4    UBC reserves the right to cancel, terminate, or suspend this Competition, at its discretion, at any time without prior notice. 

8.5    Each prize claim is subject to verification by UBC and/or its designated representatives. Entries made with multiple addresses, under multiple identities, or through the use of any device or other method to enter multiple times or entries that are in excess of the permitted number of entries are automatically void. All Competition entries obtained through unauthorized sources or which are incomplete or in any way not in compliance with these Official Contest Rules are automatically void. UBC is not responsible for lost or late entries. UBC is not responsible for any miscommunications, failed communications systems, software malfunctions, or for any human errors in connection with this Competition. UBC may suspend or terminate this Competition if UBC is of the view this Competition’s administration or fair play has been compromised. 

8.6    Your personal information is collected under the authority of Section 26(c) of the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act (FIPPA). This information provided to enter this Competition will be used only to administer this Competition, and for no other reason. 8.7    This Competition is subject to all applicable laws of the Province of British Columbia and the laws of Canada, as well as these Official Contest Rules.
