A host of UBC initiatives offer students opportunities to volunteer with sustainability-oriented programs. Students can gain hands-on experience at the UBC Farm, contribute to UBC operational sustainability with the Res SC program, or devote their energy to social sustainability issues by volunteering with the Learning Exchange. The UBC Farm offers practical volunteer opportunities to students that support over 100 different academic and community initiatives that take place on South Campus. Current popular volunteer programs at the farm include working with the Urban Aboriginal Community Kitchen Garden Project, over 8 children’s programs including the FarmWonders summer camp and the Intergenerational Landed Learning Garden Project. Students from any discipline can also gain skills in urban food production and gain insights into the larger food system through direct participation in field activities, from planting to harvesting to marketing over 200 different food crops.
UBC created the Residence Sustainability Reps program to reduce waste, water and energy consumption in residences and to build a culture of sustainability through student action. The Res SC Program is an opportunity for students living in residence to lead, inspire, and engage other residence students to find sustainable solutions and create change.
Volunteer with the Learning Exchange Trek Program and learn about the issues that affect the Downtown Eastside and other inner city communities. Share your talents, interests and skills while learning from diverse people in Vancouver’s inner-city schools and non-profit organizations.
The Arts Internship Program provides undergraduate Arts students with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the private and non-profit sectors. Arts internships are part-time, unpaid positions, and can provide you with a stepping stone to your future career.
This innovative summer internship program sponsors UBC graduate students to work on sustainability projects with the City of Vancouver. UBC graduate students are partnered with a city team and a mentor to investigate and implement one of 10 projects identified under Vancouver’s Greenest City 2020 Action Plan.
