Data-rich stock assessments are used widely throughout the world to provide fisheries management advice. A typical stock assessment model was rigorously tested by simulation. We reveal potentially dangerous asymmetry in the risk of various stock assessment assumptions. We also propose a new management approach with the potential to provide comparable management performance at a fraction of the cost.
